SOME FORMER STUDENTS' HONORS AND AWARDS

How many awards did the students at Cache Public Schools accumulate between 1981 and 1999 in interschool competitions at the area, state, and national levels?  The quick answer is, "Around 700."  But, it is an injustice merely to list the count.  The hours those students spent developing and honing their skills while producing the best work their potential could offer need to be remembered as something productive for their long-term well being and the pride it instilled in so many.

Those Cache Art and Photography students had a lot of pride and determination to be the kind of representatives that, when they walked into a show toting their pieces for judging, other schools' students would have wide eyes open and whisper to one another, "Wow!  What school is THAT?!"  Those former Cache Bulldogs built a tradition of excellence that transcended dates.  For example, they received an award in 47 consecutive shows or head-to-head, on-sight competitions over a nine-year span.

Sometimes, awards came in bunches.  My talented students pulled in 37 awards at a single show (December 15, 1988).  No single school year was more telling than 1987-1988, when they racked up 123 awards alone.  It was obvious that, when they won awards, it only reinforced in their minds that the things I was teaching them and all the hard work they were putting in was, indeed, worth the effort in the end.

Once students saw what their special vision and hard work could achieve, they began to pave a road of fine art.  Younger students 'idolized' the older trend setters.  That younger sect then joined classes determined to become the next influential artists or photographers themselves.  They would become recognized award winners in their own time knowing there were future students waiting to follow in their steps.  It was not unlike Oscar Robertson being followed by Michael Jordon who would be followed by Lebron James...except it was award winning ARTISTS AND PHOTOGRAPHERS.

This list below isn't complete, as hard as that may seem to believe.  Only the documented awards I, their teacher, could find are listed.  I didn't even sit down to try to add all this up until 2017, long after I had retired. When you read these totals, if you haven't yet looked at some of the artwork I've put on this website of my former students' artwork and photography, please take a few minutes to browse that section.  You will quickly see why the pupils raked in so many awards.

For the sake of all those pupils who worked so hard to receive their honors, I've taken the time--as best I could with the data I have available (I know I missed some)--to list an overview followed by detailed, year-by-year accomplishments.  I doff my hat to you all with thanks for the many moments of joy we shared!

"So, what about 1999-2000?"

Darrell Schultz resigned from his post over the 'Visual Arts and Photography Program' for Cache Public Schools after the 1998-1999 school year.  He had been hired to be an Associate Professor at Lake City Community College (now 'Florida Gateway College'), so his eighteen year-long stint at Cache came to an end.

"Mr. Schultz, why did your students win so many awards?"

"First of all, it sure helped that a plethora of talented students came through the classroom doors year-after-year! Even more important than their skills, though, I think it was a 'mindset' that made the student work exceptional.  My students looked at the same things everyone else was seeing but my pupils perceived those things in a different way.  In fact, the Public Broadcasting Station's Oklahoma Magazine ran a spot on our program that summarized the credo of my students...'In Art, we DARE TO BE DIFFERENT!'"
